(Description from Steam store page)

Inspired by Super Mario World, Super Ubie Island REMIX is an adorable platformer. Help Ubie defeat Dr. Terrestrial, discover secrets, repair his ship and escape Climate Island. Run, jump and glide your way through more than 25 insanely fun levels!

Visuals:

Visually the game is decent; there are bright colors and high quality sprites that look crisp and clear on a full HD screen.  Characters are detailed and clean, but not very unique, and you will find them repeating multiple times with swapped color palettes.

Backgrounds are pretty lackluster though.  There are about 4 background planes, but they are incredibly empty, un-interesting, and extremely fuzzy compared to foreground textures.  They don't add much to the experience, and they are far too repetitive.

After a while the visuals get a little stale, although they aren't ugly by any means.  A little more variation would have gone a gone way.

Sound/Music:

Sound design is pretty generic.  Most sounds don't carry any weight and they don't make much of an impact.  Jumping on enemies just doesn't feel right with the sound that plays, and collecting coins just doesn't seem exciting at all.

The music on the other hand is simply amazing.  There is a preview of the main menu theme at the top of the review if you would like to listen!  In general, the music is full of energy and is incredibly fun!

Controls:

Quite simple to control.  All that is required is W, A, S, D to move, and spacebar to jump or hover with your balloon.  In general it is decently responsive, but character movement is sometimes a little too loose for the demanding platforming sequences and boss battles.

Gameplay:

Overall the game is reasonably fun.  There are a few collectibles you can grab throughout the levels which can add a little extra challenge for completionists.  Platforming does present a strong challenge in itself, and it is always a relief to finish an insanely difficult platforming sequence.  I did find that the difficulty ramped up too quickly and made the game too punishing early on.  I am personally always up for a challenge, so I didn't mind this too much, but it might be a little frustrating for other players.  The game is very short, so the difficulty curve isn't very gradual at all.

Gameplay doesn't seem to vary much; the game keeps using the same mechanics without introducing new mechanics or enemies to experiment with.

Boss Battles:

Boss battles range from pretty good to absolutely horrible.  There are some bosses with incredibly difficult patterns to predict, and their randomness just seemed unfair and not truly difficult.  A few of the bosses were not enjoyable to fight, as they felt entirely unfair to the player.

There were some well crafted bosses though, especially the final boss battle, which was predictable yet difficult to master.

Summary:

Overall a decent little game with a few design issues.  If you are a fan of classic platformers, this game is for you!
