10 Problems with Pokemon GO at Launch

The cultural phenomenon Pokemon GO released in July of 2016 and has quickly taken the world by storm.  Gamers all over the globe are capturing Pokemon in their own world like they have always dreamed.

While I am personally having a blast with the game, there is no denying that the game in its current state has many issues.

1.  Unstable and glitchy:
This circle is
your greatest enemy

How often will you attempt to catch a Pokemon, and then the game freezes just before it is caught?  This issue is so common that most people encounter it, if not every user.

Sometimes your character will completely stop moving although you have GPS and data signals, often requiring a restart.

Recently I have also encountered a glitch that makes it impossible to load the Pokemon in my Pokedex.

For some people, these inconveniences are incredibly frustrating and can really ruin the experience.

2.  Uninformative tutorial:

The tutorial consists of a few slides of speech, and gives barely any information on how the in-game world works.  Figuring new stuff out in this game is especially a pain because you need to travel to figure out game mechanics.  A little more explanation would be nice so that users don't waste time trying to learn the mundane details of gameplay, details which should already have been explained to them beforehand.

I'm still not sure what the circles changing size around Pokemon mean...

3.  Lack of content:

There are essentially 3 main pieces of content:  Catching Pokemon, Pokestops, and Gym battles.

Catching Pokemon is very simple and fun but, there isn't much to it.  All you do is throw balls and hope they capture the Pokemon.  No combat, no nothing.  There are some tricks you need to master to get the most effective toss, but that isn't even completely necessary.

Pokestops are incredibly simple, and there isn't much to them at all,  Simply spin the icon on them once every 5 minutes to gain your rewards, and that's it.

Gym battles by far provide the most content; although it is not nearly enough to make the game feel full.

Any other game I think would have gotten a really bad reputation for such small amounts of content, but here is to hoping they add more.

4.  Servers always down:

Not much to explain here.  POGO Servers are constantly down, often getting in the way of plans you made to go out and catch Pokemon by yourself or with friends.  Everyone is very familiar with this screen:

5.  Pokemon tracker is almost useless:

I've seen people try to explain it, but I'm sure nobody really knows how the tracker works.  You more or less have to travel and pray you start moving in the correct direction to find the Pokemon you desire.  In theory it is supposed to tell your distance from the selected Pokemon, but by the time it shows you are getting close, you are already right on top of it.

6.  Crazy battery drain:

The game uses so many different aspects of your phone that it drains the battery like crazy.  It uses GPS location, Mobile data, Wi-Fi if it is available, and you often need the screen to be on high light settings, because you will be outside most of the time you are using it and it's hard to see the screen.  Not to mention if you use the game's Augmented reality feature, that uses the camera, which drains batteries even more.

7.  No interaction with local players:

In the original Pokemon games, you could battle with individuals you crossed paths with.  Now, there is no possible way to do this, as the developers completely overlooked putting local Pokemon battles into the game.

Also, in the original games, you were able to trade Pokemon via link cable with others who owned the game, or local wireless connection.  This is no longer a feature in Pokemon GO, but here is to hoping they add it in the future.

8.  People in rural areas are unable to play without pay:

If you don't live in a large city or a suburban area, you are probably out of luck.  Many people report being unable to play the game without paying for in-game currency as there are no Pokestops in their town.

It's a ghost town...
Maybe I'll find lots of ghost types here!
9.  Doesn't log steps in the background:

The game already puts a huge drain on my battery life, and to make things worse I need to keep it constantly open to log my steps to hatch eggs.

Not to mention it's a little frustrating that you walk a bit in a day and it won't be registered unless the app is open.

10.  Screen times out:

Since I need to keep the app open to log steps, shouldn't the screen NOT time out after a few seconds of inactivity?  I know it is possible to adjust the screen timeout settings on your phone, but constantly switching it back and forth can be a massive pain. This seems like something very simple that should have been addressed, but somehow the developers overlooked this small yet important detail.
