The cult classic which introduced to us the iconic portal gun in 2007. Perhaps one of the most referenced video games of all time, with internet memes such as "The cake is a lie!" or "Still Alive."
Premise:
The core concept of Portal is simple, but it was an extremely revolutionary idea at the time of its release in 2007. Experiment with the world around you and its physics to solve puzzles based around the portal gun mechanic.
Visuals:
The visuals hold up well, even to this day. While at times environments may seem stagnant and lifeless, this does in a way make sense with the story-line, as most of the game takes place in sterile and lifeless test chambers.
Sound:
A lot of the appeal of Portal revolves around the sound design. The constant one-sided banter from the GLADOS mainframe computer to the player presents much hilarity. The intelligent humor and sarcasm are often enough to make you burst out laughing.
Menus/Interface:
Menus are well laid out and self-explanatory. No problems here.
Gameplay/Controls:
Gameplay itself is very simple. Portal doesn't require lightning fast reflexes,(Most of the time) but instead puts emphasis on thinking out your next move well before executing your plan. Hasty plans can often end in your character(Chell) dying.
Controls as a proper FPS should. Left click for blue portal, and right click for orange portal. Sometimes though portal physics will get confusing, but this is often remedied by changing the orientation of the portals you have placed.
Summary:
Overall a strong gaming experience. Not necessarily the greatest game of all time, but it certainly opened up our imaginations to brand new ideas in the most charming way possible. Not to mention the memorable quotes and silly references people always make to this game.
Strongly recommended to anyone looking for a unique gaming experience.
SCORE: 8.5/10
