Game Review: League of Legends (PC/MAC OS)

League of Legends, released in October of 2009, is an extremely popular free-to-play game in the MOBA(Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) game genre.  Since then, the game has garnered for itself a gigantic following, and as of today is the most played video game of all time.

Premise:

League of Legends is a MOBA(Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) game.  Two teams of 5 players each duke it out on a battlefield in a race to destroy the opposing team's base.  Use strategy, teamwork, and technical skill to overcome your opponents and claim victory!

Visuals:

League of Legends is one of those special games that looks good no matter what.   While it doesn't have super fancy lighting or environment effects, or a million polygons, League somehow manages to look better than most games out there.  Even on a pretty low end computer with low settings, League runs nicely and looks very appealing.

The environments are colorful and nicely laid out.  There is a very cartoon-y feel to the land, but this is the reason the game looks so nice on lower-end computers.

Characters are colorful with appealing designs.  You will find yourself getting attached to the characters, although you know very little about them.  I appreciate that the characters stand out well from the backgrounds during battles, or at least as well as they can in the fast-paced carnage.

Menus/Interface:

Menus are a little confusing in League, but I suppose that is the nature of the game.  League has so much content and complexity, it is hard to consolidate it down to a few small  self-explanatory menus.

With runes, masteries, and all sorts of stats, it is easy to get lost.  While they do have a tutorial of sorts, it is far from being all-inclusive.  Be prepared for one of the biggest learning curves you have ever seen.

Gameplay/Controls:

Basic gameplay can be reasonably fast-paced yet easy to understand.  Easy to get into, but difficult to master.  In this game, knowledge really is power.

Getting out of position for once second can completely screw up an important play.  It involves a lot of teamwork and co-operation between team members.  Some knowledge of human psychology will help in playing this game.  I have seen far too many teams lose because they just could not work together as a unit.

Everything has a nice layer of polish, once you understand what everything means of course.

Controls are also easy to understand and are reasonably self explanatory.  This doesn't mean that you will be a pro at the beginning though; not by a long shot.

Summary:

A crazy fun game based on teamwork, strategy, and a strong overall knowledge of the game.  Certain aspects of the game can be very difficult to understand at the beginning though, despite its simplistic gameplay.  One of the only real complaints I have is how the game just throws you into the fray with very little explanation of how things work.

Despite this initial roadblock, don't be surprised if League of Legends game becomes a part of your daily routine.

A must-play game.

SCORE:  9.5/10
