Game Review: Sniper Fury

Android / iOS / Windows

Sniper fury is a free-to-play stationary shooter.

It was released on mobile platforms by Gameloft in December of 2015.

Premise:

Take down dangerous enemies by sniping them from a distance.  Not only that, but in some missions you'll grab an assault rifle and go in with guns a'blazing.

Build your own base and strengthen your defenses to defend your gold, then pillage other's bases to take their wealth and add it to yours.

Visuals:

Visuals are pretty generic and bland.  Nothing very special or wrong with them.  No stylizing was done to the characters or environments at all, and it most certainly doesn't look photo-realistic.  I'm not really sure where they were trying to go with this game in the art department.

Blah at its finest.

Sound:

The voice acting is just terrible.  I was laughing, it was so bad.  It would have honestly been better to just have a wall of text than the lifeless female voice.

The other sounds though are pretty flawless.

Menus/Interface:

Generally menus are reasonably easy to navigate.  Some things are placed in very round-about places which require a little running around to find, but overall decent menu design.

In-game interface gives you information you need.  Well laid out and very clear.

Controls:

Simple controls, and reasonably intuitive.  It didn't give me any major issues.  Maybe a little too easy to use.

Please note that I was using this with a mouse and keyboard, so this may affect my opinion slightly compared to a touch-screen device.

Gameplay:

Ah, and now the part we have all been waiting for.  What the heck is this game supposed to be?

All you do throughout the game is...  sit there and... shoot stuff.  Aim, shoot, aim, shoot.  Rinse and repeat.  There is absolutely no variation in game-play aside from the fact that you have a machine gun in some missions and a sniper rifle in others.  There were special events though, and that allowed me to use some rocket launcher dragon thing.  I don't really understand what that was about, but it was reasonably fun to use.

There is no player movement whatsoever.  Any time your character does move, it is in the form of a cut-scene, after which you are stuck sitting in one place again.  Its like a lame arcade rail shooter, without the rail part.  You could argue that this is the genre of game, and you would probably be right, but I seriously cannot see the appeal of this.

Also, the developers somehow thought throwing a Clash of Clans-esque base system into the game would be a great idea.  Nothing could be farther from the truth.  Below you will see a picture of the base building system:

Build your base...  Not really.
Notice anything?  How many locations are there to place troops?  Five?  There are five slots to put your troops.  This is the saddest excuse for a base builder I've ever seen, as this provides no opportunity for the user to express their own unique way of building.  Thus, taking on enemy bases grants absolutely no variety, as the troops always stand in the same spots.  Every base is exactly the same, but with different troops in the same spots.

Why even bother putting this feature in the game if you aren't going to put any work into it?

On a side note.  Trucks are apparently easier to destroy with a gun than shooting armed guards in the face with an assault rifle.

Summary:

Just a crazy mess of unfinished concepts with micro-transactions thrown in.

It just seems like this game was made to make 13-year-olds feel really macho about killing unarmed opponents.

Super meh game.  I would not recommend this at all unless you are a fan of the stationary shooter.

SCORE:  6 / 10

Do you agree?  Maybe I just don't like stationary shooters and I'm being unjust in my judgement?  Let me know what you think in the comments below!
