Game Review: Bitmite Blitz

Bitmite Blitz is a free-to-play indie game for Android and iOS developed by Coinflip Games.

It was originally designed in under 72 hours for the Ludum Dare 29 contest; an impressive feat to say the least.

Premise:

Bitmite Blitz is the fast-paced distance game where your own fat finger is your biggest enemy!  Travel as far and as long as you can while guiding
your termite past obstacles and enemies.

Obtain awesome power ups to achieve the greatest highscore among your friends, or better yet, the world!

Almost makes me want to laugh at my own failure.
Visuals:

A cutesy little game.  Some sprites are a little generic, but the visuals are mostly appealing, defined, and colorful.  It is usually very easy to see approaching obstacles, although certain obstructions will blend in with their surroundings a little, making them a little difficult to spot and dodge in time.

Also, when you reach certain amounts of points, there will be a giant explosion of particles on your screen.  I found this extremely distracting, and it would often kill me because I couldn't focus on the stuff flying quickly at me.

Music:

Good stuff.  A very strong collection of music.  It gets your blood pumping for the fast-paced obstacle-dodging action.

Menus/Interface:

Not much to say.  All very self explanatory.  Good interface and menu system.

Gameplay:

Bitmite Blitz is very simplistic.  Gameplay consists of quickly guiding your termite past stationary obstacles, and dodging fast-moving objects which are shot at you.  Aside from this, there are some powerups and items scattered throughout each stage.  Pick these up to give yourself a giant score advantage!

DON'T CRASH!
Don't let the deceptively simple gameplay fool you though.  This game can be a blast for hours on end!  I found myself wasting away an hour here and there each time I started to play.  I even got the current high score on one of the stages!

There are also 5 stages, and each one has a unique twist on the obstacles you encounter and powerups you are able to access.  No two levels feel exactly the same.

Don't forget the global scoreboard and achievements!

Controls:

There are two control schemes in this game:  The first is touch control.  You can drag your finger across your phone's screen, and the termite will follow your finger.  The only issue with the touch controls is that your fingers will obstruct your view of obstacles, causing you to crash.  Once you figure out how to hold your fingers though, this doesn't happen very often.

The other option is tilt control.  While I always appreciate options, I find the tilt controls to be a little useless and impossible to use, so I always play with touch controls.

Summary:

A very sleek and well polished little game.  I honestly was very surprised by the level of polish this little game has.  It is certainly not the perfect game, but it is definitely is a bunch of fun, and worth checking out!  I mean, its free, right?  I wouldn't be surprised if this became the next big viral game, but this time, the game would deserve it!

Step aside Flappy Bird, here comes Bitmite Blitz!

  • Pros:
  • Very simple Controls.
  • Stages change up the flow of gameplay, preventing it from getting boring.
  • Cute sprites.
  • Fun Music.

  • Cons:
  • Distracting explosions to screw up your run.
  • Um...  no bacon?  (Seriously, there isn't much wrong with this game at all!)
I strongly advise you to check this game out!
